The Supermoto practice day came about when I received a phone call from my old friend Max, he’d just got settled into his 2nd home with his family in Los Angeles, got over a bit of jet-lag and got in-touch with me as he wanted to go and play on his Supermoto machine. I’d not hung out with Max for quite a few years as our paths hadn’t crossed recently but we used to hang out quite a bit when we raced in 250cc GP’s back in the late 90’s.

I’ve always had loads of respect for Max’s riding abilities and found him to be a really great guy so I thought this would be a great chance to grab my video camera and shoot you a bit of footage. Plus at the same time show you a different side to Max Biaggi, shown here riding for fun and away from
the pressures of the race track.

The venue was Grange and it is a great Supermoto and Karting track, with 14 corners in just 0.8 of a mile, it keeps you very busy, lap after lap. It was my first time playing around on a Supermoto machine and I only got to go after I managed to scrounge a ride on someone else’s machine at the last minute after me and my buddy Nick rang around everywhere. It was all worth it, the day turned out to be a totally awesome experience and I loved every bit of it, thank-you Metric Method.

Well apart from the high and dry desert temperatures which I found to be totally exhausting, knackering in fact, probably not helped by the fact I’m a Brit who is more used to trying to thaw out rather than staying hydrated. Max however ran it to the stop, session after session, hour after hour while just about hitting the same spot on the track lap after lap, all while hardly breaking a sweat.

He’d come past me at an incredible rate as he lapped me again and again, and made sure it was close, very close, sometimes so close he’d just bash me out of the way, it was brilliant fun. Sorry I haven’t got more footage for you but I was having way too much excitement that I almost didn’t get any and my GoPro never recovered from bouncing around between Max’s swingarm and rear wheel for a session when my bodged duct tapped camera mount came partially unstuck.

Anyway, here is a bit of footage and I hope you enjoy the video!
