    Story by Jamie Robinson:

    Mojave VO

For this adventure I would go and explore the desert roads and trails of Kern County, California, it is a remote area, that away from the main highway, there are few paved roads, yet dirt trails that vanish over the horizon in every direction.

After spotting a bunch of planes from the roadside, I crossed the tracks and then I turned off down a dirt trail, to see if I could get a closer look.

This place turned out to be the Mojave Aircraft Boneyard, a vast area where retired commercial aeroplanes come to lay to rest.

Of course, you can only get so close, but it was still fascinating to see, even from a distance.

Quickly moving on I would then head over to a place even further out into the desert plains, this is in fact California’s 3rd largest city by size, but 331st largest by population!, its name is California City.

Before I got there, I’d first have to wait for the rush hour traffic to cross….As I rolled into town, I knew instantly that this place was going to spring up a few surprises.

Riding down the road of the biggest city that was never built was just surreal, out here are over 200 sq miles of dusty roads, all with names, etched into the desert landscape, that really,  just lead to nowhere.

California City was really created by Nat Mendelsohn, an ambitious land developer from the 1960’s who had a plan for the future, he envisioned a city to one day rival Los Angeles. So land was bought in the out here in the desert, roads built, lots divided up and the future dream sold to families and investors.

Now fast forward to 2017, and the city has failed to materialize into what Nate first thought, development was slow, few people moved out here and the city really doesn’t go much more than a few miles from the centre of town.

After finding the Jail, I was happy to ride off into the distance, but I didn’t get very far.

Thankfully the tire slime did the trick, the puncture was only small and the Green Goo plugged it, for now my luck was on my side….It was a time to be happy, thankful and enjoy the dusty network of trails before me.

Now the sun was dropping from the sky and the desert was lit up with beautiful golden colors.

Soon it would be the end of the day, but now, lets ride!

    Day 2

After a rather unusual breakfast and gassing up, I would then head off to see what more weird and wonderful things I could find while riding the desert trails on my trusty machine.

Far out in desert and well away from the main population, it was amazing to see all this development that got started and never finished.

Incredibly California City has over 51,000 plots and an under ground water system installed throughout.

But this also now means the aging pipeline has endless main line water leaks in the 170mile system, over 400 last year alone!

I personally didn’t come across any major water leaks but the first water meter I found looked like this….You never know what you are going to come across!

I’m starting to think I might see a Burger Van on the shimmering horizon…..

After my tasty snack, I rode down more random roads and this time stumbled upon a part built structure.

Finally I rode to the top of a large hill to see what view I could get, and on reaching the summit, I could see for many miles.

You could see the City, the Jail and many miles of the trails that I’d ridden, just incredible!

What a fascinating place this had been a great moto-adventure!

But it doesn’t matter what you ride, or where, just get on a bike and go….
