Due to my TT commitments I only made it down to Silverstone on Saturday evening, just in time get a nights sleep and then absorb the MotoGP action on race day.

In typical British fashion the early morning looked bright and hopeful but this was soon replaced with a grey cloud covering that dropped rain on Silverstone all day long.

Personally I don’t mind the rain as sometimes it can make races even more exciting and interesting but with Cal Crutchlow out due to a heavy fall in Saturdays qualifying where he banged his head hard and broke his collarbone, the Brit’s had no-one to cheer for in the premier class and had to watch on, get soaked and cheer for someone else.

There was plenty of crashes in the wet conditions as both the factory Yamaha riders of Lorenzo and Spies went down, thankfully without injury and also the super fast Marco Simoncelli crashed out, again while in contention for his first MotoGP podium.

At the front of the field it was all Casey Stoner on his factory Repsol Honda who just got the hammer down and pulled away from his team-mate Andrea Dovizioso and went on to win by a comfortable margin.

Behind Dovi was the battle for the final podium position and despite breaking his collarbone as the Spanish GP last weekend, Yamaha’s satellite rider Colin Edwards put in a storming ride to join the Honda’s on the podium. Colin had to ride hard until the end as just behind was Nickey Hayden who was gaining in confidence with his Ducati and put in a huge push towards the end of the race as he went after Edwards and picked up the fastest lap of the race as he chased Edwards down, eventually ending in 4th.

Rizla Suzuki’s Alvaro Bautista gave put in a solid ride in the treacherous conditions to get his best result of the year in 5th place while well behind him was the fans #1 Valentino Rossi who was having a miserable weekend as he qualified 13th and on the back row of the grid but came through to finish 6th and even though he was well back and in no man’s land for much of the race and circulating well off the pace received the biggest cheer from the British fans as he splashed around.

Many of the fans left after the main race of the day due to the worsening weather but it didn’t stop the little 125’s from racing and Red Bull’s 17-year-old Jonas Folger won his first GP from Johann Zarco as they broke away from the rest of the 125cc field. Zarco was stripped of his own debut victory after an ‘illegal pass’ at the Catalunya GP last weekend, shadowed the young German for most of the race eventually finishing just over 3 seconds behind.
