Wilky

MotoGeo reflects on the life of Alan ‘Wilky’ Wilkinson

It is with great sadness in which I write this post, Alan ‘Wilky’ Wilkinson – 78, a close family friend recently past away and it was someone whom I known for most of my life, who’s motorcycling passion and zest for life influenced and touched me at a young age.

Gold Star racing club, Alan, Madge and the little kid is JamieAlan ‘Wilky’ Wilkinson, AKA the Cadwell Kid (Due to his love for the race course and countless victories) was some who’s strong voice, broad smile and unique laughter, ran deep, as so did his love for BSA Gold Star’s, especially the 500cc Gold Star.

After getting stopped for speeding for the third time in two hours in three different towns, Alan took took to the racetracks in 1956 at Cadwell Park. This is where he really learned to ride, he said. In 1960, Alan put his love for motorcycles to one side in favor of getting married and starting a family with his loving wife Madge. He wouldn’t return to the racerack until 1972.

Founder of the Gold Star racing section in 1984, Alan raced on his beloved BSA Gold Star until 1996, and ended the same way he started by riding to the track, taping up his registration plate and lights, racing and then ride home again after. An awesome way to hang up your racing leathers, if ever there was one!

Wilky and his home made sidecar with wife madge and a friendIt was my Dad, Phil (PJ) who through the Goldie Racing Club, met Alan and Madge, after my Dad’s racing finished, they remained friends and we looked forward to Alan’s visits from Derbyshire to Holmfirth on his Gold Star, who right to the end, kick started his own bikes, rode twice a week and said to me a few years ago “I get on the bike my age and come back feeling 20 years younger. With my two Gold Stars in the garage, country and western music playing and my German Shepard by my side, that’s me, I don’t need anything else. Well, I suppose I could make it even more perfect by having Castrol R dripping on a candle.”

Alan leaves behind a beloved Son (Trevor) and two Daughters (Karen and Sandra), many friends, a great friend to my Dad and will be greatly missed and never forgotten
